Umzug mit Hund

Removal with a dog

28. July 2023

Moving house with a dog is a challenge for both humans and animals for different reasons. While owners deal with the practical aspects of the move, dogs naturally find it difficult to understand everything that happens around them during the removal. Nevertheless, most dogs cope quite well with the challenges of moving house. How you approach the move is also important: The dog instinctively senses the mood of his "pack". We will show you the best way to deal with your pet when moving house with a dog at the various stages of the removal.

Before the removal with a dog: Preparations

Before moving house with a dog, there are boxes to pack, clothes to stow away, furniture to dismantle and renovation work to do. Many dogs naturally show an interest in this. Allow your dog to take part in the preparations, but make sure that your pet cannot injure itself in the process. Pay particular attention to tools or pieces of furniture on the floor, boxes falling over or slippery surfaces.

On the moving day: Have the dog with you or hand it in?

On the moving day itself, it can be practical to leave the dog with trusted persons (family, friends) who are not directly involved in the move. Alternatively, hire a removal helper who will mainly look after the dog. Here too, it is helpful to have a person with whom the dog is already familiar. This means you have one less thing to worry about on the day of the move and can concentrate fully on the successful completion of the move with a clear conscience.

Of course, it’s all easier if you book the full-service removal service from Umzüge Mansholt: We pack the belongings for your private move and ensure that everything arrives safely at the desired destination and is then reassembled.

What to do with your dog after moving home?

If you have not booked a full-service move, you and your family and friends will need to set up and put away your belongings in your new home, from furniture in the living room to cutlery and glasses in the kitchen. The same rules apply here as for the preparations for the move – the dog’s safety must be guaranteed. Cuddling up together on the couch after the work is done is the reward for all the hard work.

Dogs usually settle into their new environment quite well after the move. Nevertheless, you should not leave the dog alone in the unfamiliar surroundings for too long during the familiarisation phase. Instead, build up absences slowly.

Administrative matters: re-registering a dog after moving

One administrative task remains for the dog – re-registering after the removal. If you are staying in the same municipality, you can simply re-register the dog with the relevant authority. This can be found in the current dog tax notice. As a rule, an informal letter is sufficient for this purpose; sometimes there are also special forms, for example on the website. When moving to a new municipality, the dog must first be deregistered at the old place of residence and then registered in the new municipality. With these tips, you are well prepared for the move with your dog. We wish you Good Luck!
