Moving into a student dormitory
For many young people, moving into a student residential home is the first big step towards growing up and becoming independent. Studying in a new town and moving into a student hall of residence entails moving out of your parents’ house and often getting your own flat for the first time. This makes the move into a student hall of residence even more exciting than a relocation or the start of a new chapter in life is anyway – our checklist makes it a lot easier and more relaxed.
Moving as a student: What do I have to consider?
In many cases, moving in as a student means moving into the respective student dormitory. This is often the cheapest option and not all students can count on the financial support of their family or have a profitable part-time job right from the start of their studies to earn the necessary small change themselves. However, you should bear in mind that many other first-year students will be in the same situation and should therefore try to find a room in a student dormitory on time. The best thing to do is to contact the student union at your university or college.
The procedure for moving into a student hall of residence depends on whether you move into a furnished or unfurnished room. Unfurnished rooms are usually cheaper, but you may have to pay for new furniture if you need it. Measure the room beforehand for this purpose – this is also important to check whether you can possibly bring furniture from home. It is perfectly fine to limit yourself to the most necessary inventory at the beginning, which consists of a bed, a wardrobe or chest of drawers, a desk, a chair and, if necessary, a couch or armchair and shelves. You probably won’t have much more space available anyway.
You don’t usually need to worry about kitchen and bathroom equipment, as this is already available when you move into a student residential home – this applies to appliances such as a washing machine and cooker as well as the necessary crockery. However, we recommend that you invest in a small fridge that you can keep in your room, as well as a kettle and, if you like, a microwave.
Things that you will always need when moving into a furnished student hall of residence room are bed linen, towels, toilet paper, kitchen roll, tissues, a laundry basket and detergent, washing materials and hygiene products, as well as a toiletry bag and various cleaning utensils such as a hoover, broom, dustpan, bucket and mop. In addition, you will of course need clothes, your technical equipment including cables and extension cords, textbooks, writing materials and personal items to make yourself homely. These can be books, decorative elements, plants and pictures, for example.
